2nd Phase of the Vietnam War
• Viet Cong used their women because of the gender equality reform, recruiting a countless number of women into their army. They are incredibly mean, hid grenades in fruit baskets and hand them to US troops. The grenades would explode and the soldiers would die/get wounded
• Believed that modern war communists such as the Taliban utilize the tactics of the North Vietnamese soldiers.
• The Viet Congs used a truck that is filled with cabbage and drove up to a US place and a bunch of cabbage rolled down (they had bombs inside them), they placed claymores in there and it exploded, my dad’s house was near the fort in Saigon, ½ of the building exploded and everyone was scared, called the Metropoll Military Base, a place for troops to rest. Because it was a claymore, whatever direction the cabbage rolled towards it would explode that direction. So a bunch of Vietnamese Police kicked the cabbage away from my dad’s house to prevent it from getting exploded. (1965).
• VCs would walk pass the US Soldiers and put their hands in their pockets, the soldiers thought that they were about to pull out nades, but it was a dog, the Soldiers shot the dude. It was just a citizen and he didn’t undertand the soldier’s warning because he did not know English.
• Diem loved his country and did not do any harm to other people, believed his family, many VCs were hiding in Buddhist temple, the VCs actually protested to overthrow Diem because of his discrimination against busshism, but the VCs set it up, they were the busshist monks, not revealing their true identity. VCs shaved their heads, and acted as temple monks. Some other temple monks had to burn themselves (VCs) >.>. Diem did this in order to eliminate these temple monks.

2nd Phase of the Vietnam War
(over the phone, but she lives in Seattle)
• Witness the Viet Congs invading Saigon, many events happen, like the ones described above.
• Talked about the Buddhist Protest and how it wasn’t Diem’s fault, Diem is a very trusty man, her dad had very good relations with Diem back then.
• Knows that Diem has been accused of discrimination against the Buddhist dudes but that isn’t true and that the Viet Congs only brought up the matter to overthrow Diem.
• The Tet event was very scary for her, about how VCs attacked random troops in the city of Saigon when everyone else was celebrating one of Vietnam’s most largest holidays
• Couldn’t remember much just the main events I described above
The Garfield High School (Seattle) Oral History project.
This is a collection of interviews with people about their personal experiences with events of worldwide historical significance since the end of World War 2. They were done by Garfield 10th grade A.P. World History students as end-of-year oral history research projects.
We've published these projects to the web because they are impressive and deserve to be seen more widely than just in our history class. We invite you to read a few. The label cloud can give you a sense of what topics are represented. You can search for a specific project by student name or topic, or search on topics and key words that interest you. Comments are welcome, of course.
